Why is it important to be dynamic?

Many speaking coaches focus their efforts on helping you craft a talk. They may even help you polish it. Yes, having the right words is of course crucial!

However, unless they come from the theatre, they likely don't know that your audience can be more than "interested"...

You can get standing ovations...

Easily get more speaking gigs...

Raise your speaking fees (or start charging!)...

And become a transformational force on stage and in videos.

Yes, those are within your reach.

Why it's crucial for experienced speakers to become dynamic

If you want to be highly impactful - even transformational - you need more than an awesome talk.

You need amazing delivery skills - and to know
when, why and how to use them.

Think of it this way: you need a set of tools. Right now, you might have, for example, a hammer… but you could do a lot more with a screwdriver, a wrench, etc.

Want another analogy? You might really be able to play one or two chords on a piano… but being able to play multiple chords - and knowing how to put them together to be an exciting song - would make you a musician. In other words, you can make some great sounds… but it takes training to learn how to play really well.

Same with your speaking. But we need to address something essential, before we move onto skills that will take your speaking to a new level.

Imagine taking the stage, captivating the audience with every word...

Even before you speak... people are so excited you're there, to see what you bring.

You walk onto the stage with presence. And when you speak, you use your voice in way that's powerful and compelling... and can easily spontaneous adjust to the needs of the room because you're deeply connected.

You've mastered the art of dynamic speaking, and know how express yourself with clarity and range.

While remaining authentic and real, you move your audience with your body and voice... and, you feel filled with joy, aliveness and play!

When you show up dynamically, you'll never be afraid of losing their attention... because you can get it back anytime with ease.

What participants say about this work
"I used to hold myself quite tightly physically, mentally and of course vocally when going to speak. Jonathan's advanced speaking techniques and methods gave me a vastly greater range of expression and much, much more skill. What is so exciting is that it is at the level of the operating system - it is how I now use my voice, my body and my presence - giving an experience of spaciousness. I’m able to hit that sweet spot of excellent preparation (knowing exactly what I’m doing when) and responsiveness to the needs of the moment, which has taken my speaking to a completely new level of creativity and enjoyment for me, and for my audiences." - Simon Berkowitz

Why I'm teaching this

Showing up dynamically on stage is my expertise and joy. I've spent much of my life immersed in two worlds: public speaking and theatre. I began both around the age of 14, and have been a theatre director, actor, playwright, teacher and solo performer for decades - with graduate degrees in both Theatre as well as Performance Studies and Speech Communication.

The modality I created, The WholeSpeak Method, integrates performance techniques (acting, movement and vocal work) as well as deep inner growth work into speaking and leadership presence - so you can show up authentically, confidently and dynamically. My clients range from CEOs to engineers to coaches and healers, and have coached thousands over the past 28 years. They've spoken on stages like SXSW, TEDx, Wisdom 2.0, and countless conferences... speaking to audiences up to 165,000.

Is it your turn to more fully own the stage?

And do you have all of the foundational skills necessary?

To become dynamic, you also need the FOUNDATIONS.
(Are you missing one of them?)

Dynamics are an advanced skill, and are built on top of a foundation. And here's the unfortunate truth:
MOST SPEAKERS ARE MISSING FOUNDATIONS!

Do any of these apply to you?

VOCAL PROBLEMS. You...
  • Get vocal strain, and your voice gets exhausted...
  • Often say filler words/phrases like "um," and "you know," or elongate words while thinking of what to say

COMFORT/CONFIDENCE ISSUES. You...
  • Are more in the groove after speaking for a few minutes (but lose your chance for a great first impression)...
  • Get nerves or discomfort when you speak at bigger or more important events
  • Sometimes feel stiff, awkward, forced, or just "not like you" when you're offstage
  • Aren't powerfully moving your audience

PERFORMANCE ISSUES. You...
  • Are inconsistent - sometimes great, sometimes not
  • Don't always get the results you want from your call to action
  • Don't feel good about how you appear on video

The foundations for being dynamic include a strong and powerful voice, improved confidence and comfort... showing up with connection... and you knock it out of the park every single time.

They are a much larger topic, but here's the one thing to remember:

With the speaking foundations, you show up with authenticity, confidence and aliveness.

Let's break down those 3 things.

Authenticity: you must be yourself. You can't move your audience if you're simply in performance mode. Being yourself is staying deeply connected to your feelings, your truth, and your power.

Confidence. This is not the same as overconfidence, nor being egotistical. True confidence is also being comfortable being vulnerable in front of a group of strangers - and sharing what's deeply important to you.

Aliveness. Have you ever been afraid to really shine and stand out, for fear something negative would happen? Or, have you been told you're "too much," and you hold back?

These painful experiences may have held you back from letting yourself unleash your full self-expression. And let me tell you clearly:

Your spirit, your aliveness, is needed!!!

And, it will inspire others to follow your call to action... and to work with you.

These skills are normally taught via an online training, Claim Your Voice: Speak with Power and Presence. It teaches everything from confidence to presence to vocal power.

Then you're ready to learn advanced skills - how to be dynamic... which is all about variation.

VARIATION IS THE KEY TO KEEPING YOUR AUDIENCE'S RAPT ATTENTION.

Otherwise, they’ll start to tune out... no matter what you're saying.

WHEN YOU HAVE THEM: the more dynamics you have - and knowing when and why to use them (back to the first analogy: don’t use a hammer when you need to tighten a bolt) - the more compelling you’ll be.

What participants say about this work
"I came away from Jonathan's Dynamic Speaker training with a great new set of speaking tools, and permission to explore how I want to make an impact. The course was extremely thorough and well-structured, and at the same time offered ample opportunity for practice and experimentation. I became much more aware of my habitual speaking style, and was able both to value my strengths and to learn how I could expand my expressive range. The training also provided an invaluable forum for trying out and receiving constructive, individualized feedback on my ideas and their delivery, which felt essential to my growth as a speaker." - Dinorah Meyer

At the Dynamic Speaker Retreat, you'll learn 3 delivery skill sets to consistently move and inspire your audience.

Day 1: VOCAL DYNAMICS

Most people don’t utilize the full range of their voice. They end up sounding either monotone, or at least constricted... and may lose the audience’s attention as a result.

Remember the piano analogy? Being able to play more notes and chords is what makes it interesting! It's the same when you speak.

You'll learn how to produce core vocal dynamics, including pitch, volume, tempo/pacing, and pausing.

And... you'll learn WHY and WHEN to use them.

Each vocal dynamic affects an audience differently. You'll discover more about the psychology of speaking, to engage your audience powerfully.

DAY 2: SPEAKING STYLES
Most experienced speakers have one great speaking style. (Two at most.)

Unfortunately, your audience will get used to it quickly. Which is why you may start off great, but lose their attention after a while.

On Day 2, you'll learn a vocabulary of speaking styles to move your audience and keep their rapt attention - or get it back if you lose it. These come from a somatic/embodied method called Laban Movement Analysis. When you know them, you can use them to UPLIFT, INSPIRE, and MOVE your audience in a variety of ways.

Overall, the different styles (8 in total) become tools to deeply impact your audience.

And when you do, you become even more dynamic, and even motivationalno matter what your topic may be.
DAY 3: CREATE MULTIPLE CHARACTERS TO BRING YOUR STORIES TO LIFE.
Speaking on big stages will be more powerful (and fun!!) if you know actor secrets, such as:

  • Using the whole stage. Know how to walk and move so that you move your audience!
  • Bringing stories to life through characters. Did you know that *anyone* can learn how to play characters? I’ve taught many hundreds to do so effectively… with a 100% proven method!
    • When you do, your stories become so much more engaging!
    • These could be lightly suggested or played more fully, depending on what’s appropriate for your content and the audience.
  • “Score” your talks like a piece of music. In other words, you learn how to intentionally add dynamics and speaking styles from beginning to end, so that it builds as well as keeps your audience’s attention throughout.

These are awesome onstage… and you can apply them to live and recorded video as well!

Learn all of these in a small group, on a big stage of a 200-seat theatre.

You'll practice playing to a large room...  so you can literally own the stage.

In addition to hands-on technique building all three days, you'll get personalized attention.

Bring excerpts from both a talk and a story to practice speaking to the full theatre - multiple times during the retreat - and receive supportive feedback to bring your speaking skills to the next level... and have the audience in the palm of your hand.

Your speaking will not only be more dynamic...
it can become transformational.  And when that happens...

You become a stand-out speaker who makes people say WOW!

You get more speaking gigs... and can command higher speaking fees.

You have more fun! It’s joyful and fun to add in these skills!

By the way, when these are in place, here is what does not happen: You do not lose authenticity.

Authenticity does not mean speaking like you used to, or being faithful to an old version of yourself. And it doesn’t mean speaking exactly like you do in everyday conversation.

In fact, enhancing self-expression is a process of self-expansion. You grow your capacity to impact. And, you may even find yourself feeling lighter, freer and more at ease… every day.

Now that you know the details, do you want to know how to really embody these techniques, and bring them into any talk?
